Default K&N Filter, dealer said could cause problems

Does this sound right? Had my truck at the stealership yesterday for rough idle and what I thought could be exhaust leak. They confirmed exhaust leak but noted on my diagnostic print out that K&N filter could be contributing to the rough idle and that I need to replace with paper filter.

Anyone else?

I have been running a K&N filter with Gotts mod for a few years and have not had any problems. Is your filter to spec as far as cleaning/oiling? Seems like there would be more of an outcry if there were inherent problems. Most of the issues I have heard of were caused by over oiling.

I have been using a K&N filter for a few years as well without the Gotts mod (soon to change)and I have not been having isues. I second the cleaned and not over oiled comment.

The filter came with the truck and was super dirty. i cleaned it and oiled it, let it sit in the sun after oiling for a bit and stuck it back in. Truck ran the same before the cleaning as it does now. Not sure, I plan on keeping it in there, just seeing if anyone else had been told this before.

Never heard this before. I've used K&N filters in most of my vehicles with no issues.

different air filters and CAI's can cause lean conditions. but I don't think a k&n will cause much of an issue if any. I run one.

You should try cleaning your maf maybe the filter was over oiled and that oil went up the tube getting on the sensor

If it is not over-oiled, it won't cause a problem. Too much oil can hurt the MAF. And if the truck is not programmed for a CAI or a K&N with the Gotts, it can run lean. A K&N drop-in with stock plumbing shouldn't hurt anything. My old ranger has 200K on it and has always had a K&N drop-in.

If it was dirty when you got it it probably compromised your MAF so that is a good place to start. Lots of threads on how to best clean those.
