I still have a loud tick. I did find what I think is causing my problem though, I found a loose cam follower and lash adjuster on the drivers side. Is it possible to change out a lash adjuster without pulling the cam? Does anybody have any advice for changeing out the lash adjuster?

I dont know about the lash adjusters but they should be pretty simple to narrow it down, either its broke or not. If not check the VCT solonoids, often they cause a tick as well

Yes you can pull out lash adjuster with out pulling cam . There is an expensive tool to remove follower or . Some have used a large screwdriver and held the keepers in place u an push on the stem to pull out the follower then lash adjuster.. those springs are pretty tough.

Well I think I might try the screwdriver first and see if that will work, they want $200+ for the 3 valve spring compressor.

I have the same problem. There's still a tick after replacing the timing parts.

I actually had 24 new lash adjusters and roller followers when I had the front cover off. I even had the freedom racing valve compression tool. But I didn't replace them.

I was running out of time. And for the life of me I couldn't get the freedom racing tool in towards the firewall. It's pretty tall. Maybe it's for a mustang.

I did find that to replace the roller followers and lash adjusters on a 5.4, you have to remove the camshafts. I tried to get to the lash adjusters without removing the camshafts, believe me. I could get the roller follower out, but the cam lobe blocks the lash adjuster.

In the ford shop manual they pull the roller followers, disconnect the phaser, and pull the camshaft. Then the old lash adjusters are replaced. Then the cam goes back on and then roller followers and finally the phaser.

If I could have figured out the valve compression tool I had I would have done it. But I didn't so that's a project for next summer.

In the meantime I'm enjoying the startups without chain rattle.

The cams have to be pulled. If don't want to pull the timing chain cover, just pull the valve covers and picka a sideshort to workthe on, passenger side is more difficult due to access. Next - take out the the followers with screwdriver, wedge the timing chain, pull the phaser, then the cam, and then pluck out all 12 lifters. Install in reverse. I remove splash guard from the fenderwell to gain access to the intake valve followers.

As mentioned, you can do this with either the camshafts in place, using the tool or with some leverage devices with care, or you can wedge the timing chain in place, remove the phaser and lift the camshaft up.
Replace the rockers and the lifters, make sure you soak the new ones in lots of oil first.
