JBA header install on an 07 (pics)
couple months ago i got a set of JBA headers off ebay and finally got around to do the install. i didnt get off work untill 4pm today and then i had to let the exhaust cool down so i got a late start on the project. ive only done one side so far, the driver's side.
JBA says these headers are for 04-06 but i figured 07 was close enough for it to work. we had to do some bending on the egr pipe to get it to hook back up. it wasnt easy but it was doable.......obviously
everything bolted up just fine. the quality of these headers is second to none.......maybe thats why jba wants about $800 for a set. i paid just over 200 for them tho
i test fit the factory pipe (altho i have yet to hook it up) and it mates up to the jba headers better then it did to the factory manifolds
i was surprised to find out how well the factory manifolds appeared to flow. they have large ports but because its the log style exhaust, all the ports enter it at a sharp 90* angle killing air flow. the headers will smooth that out and should make the truck sound more aggressive. it got dark so i couldnt do the other side. good thing im off work tomorrow. remember i had said i thought the driver's side would be harder? well i was wrong. i tried to pull a few of the manifold nuts off other passenger side and quickly found its going to be harder then the the driver's side due to the fact the motor is closer to the frame and the ac compressor and starter are in the way. but that will be taken care of tomorrow.

Yea the passenger side has always been a bitch on these trucks.
I've got a couple ?'s
1. Are you going to get any custom tunning done to help get the best out of them?
2. What kind of UCA's are those?
3. Dyno in the near future? I would LOVE to see what kind of numbers you get.

2. they are total chaos and they are sick! the uniball ensures i wont be replacing ball joints
3. we will see about the dyno. a local shop has dyno day every few months so i could get 3 pulls for 45bux but if i have to pay full price its not worth it. i know hp wont be amazing. its just a 4.6L just trying to get every little bit out of that little motor i can. i think ill be getting the 60k v COP's from troyer next but thats not for a while. my g/f really wants to go to vegas in September. its been a couple months since we've been so we are over due and the COPs are probably going to get put on the back burner untill after the trip

Paint it black
try looking at summit for the cop's
they have a **** ton and are good prices...same part numbers as the stang i beleave so even a set on the coral is doable...
let us know when they are finally done....and tools needed..a good write up be tight but ill do without if need be...if its bad *** enough i may have to add it to the waiting list..

time for a little update. its now noon and im on a lunch break. been at it for about 2 hours now.
here is a shot of the head with the stock manifold off
it was a nightmare to get the front two bolts on the top side out so to make it easier putting the new ones in, i modified the header flange so that i could install the bolts in the head with the headers off and then slide the headers in place with the bolts already there. worked quite well. the other side had two holes already enlarged from the factory like this.
here is a shot of the passenger side header in place
6 of the 8 bolts are tight. the two hardest to reach will be tackled after lunch. after that its just a matter of hooking up the factory exhaust again and seeing what she sounds like.

HJD, i already have a magnaflow 3" SI/SO catback. i really want to run some high flow cats but because i live in california, magnaflow only makes one model that is up to california smog standards and they are about $220 each. im not spending $440+ for 5hp thats BS. and this is coming straight from Mike Troyer. he himself told me its a waste even if i could get the cheap $80 ones because they cats ford puts on the 04+ f150s are the same ones they ran on the lightnings so if they flowed well enough for that i think its fine on my non boosted 4.6L if you have the money and you mainly want sound enhancement, go for it, if your looking for hp, dont waste your money......so says mike. and i agree.
blackbetty, no i have never thought about wrapping them. i did that on my turbocharged 5.0 and that was less then fun to do but it does help. the little extra heat doesnt bother me. my intake tube is plastic so heat soak wont be that big of a deal and the filter is pretty well shielded. add that to the fact that the f150 has a huge engine bay and i have efans so even more room under the hood, there is plenty of cool air flowing around when moving that im not going to worry about it.
anyways, im all done guys. have a few more pics for you.
under neither the passenger side. it was a b*tch with the starter in the way.
topside, same header
driver's side
it was an ordeal but worth it i think. it ended up being a 2 man job. luckily my neighbor came over and helped me out. i dont have a list of tools needed because i used so many, both pneumatic and elbow grease powered. for the most part, anyone who has worked on cars for a while will have all the tools needed to do the job. small ratchets and small sockets are a must have. so is a set of deep sockets. swivels and extensions are a must as well as an assortment of common sized open ended wrenches.
upon initial start up it sounded like it leaked bad. i went back and tightened everything down (after spraying the headers with penetrating oil and waiting an hour) and when we started it back up it still sounded like it leaked but after about 2 seconds of idling the sounds went away. to make sure it wasnt a fluke i reved it, no noise. shut it down. let it sit for a while and started it again. no noise so we are good to go there. i checked the dash. the check engine light was on. it was then i realized i had the egr unplugged. i pulled the code using my x3 it was code p0108 i think. i hooked up the egr and used the x3 to clear my codes. started the truck up and reved it, no more check engine light. we sprayed the headers at every joint with soapy water to check for leaks and there was none.
at idle you cant tell a difference at all which im very happy about. this is my daily driver i want it to be comfortable. when i rev it, its another story. sounds much more aggressive but not a whole lot louder then it was with just the catback.
i havent gone on a test drive yet. im filthy dirty and there is no way im getting in my truck like this. i have the light sand colored interior and i want to keep it that way. i cant wait to hear and feel the gains when the truck is under load.
the install is a 2 man job. 2 guys who start early in the morning, say 8am could have this job done before night fall. i stretched it out over 2 half days because i dont like all day install jobs, i prefer 2 short days over 1 long one. even my two great danes are feeling it. they spent most of the day outside with me and now they are both sound asleep on the floor in the middle of the room. lol
i left the inner fenders out for now. im going to wait a week, make sure everything is still tight and then reinstall them.
