iwe solenoid question
I've searched and read the stickies and i believe that i have the iwe solenoid problem. I just wanted a second opinion. Driving home from worm tonight the roads were horrible. When i left work the truck went in 4x4 fine and worked for about 10 miles. After that it clunked numerous times and i then lost 4x4 but the light was still on. When i stopped and went from 2 to 4hi then to 4lo i could hear it engaging. Even in 4lo the gearing was super low as expected but rear wheels only. After a few miles with the **** turned to 4hi it didnt clunk or make a noise but just started working and worked the rest of the way home. Opinions??

If I read his post correctly... truck will vent vacuum and 4WD will engage...it will not stay engaged...

Oh my mistake. Could it be transfer case motor problems? Mine froze up on me one day and I tapped it with a hammer and broke it free. I could hear it trying to engage, but it wasn't working. Check your transfer case motor, doesn't hurt to double check everything.

^^^^yup
Try this. Pull the little vacuum hoses off the IWE's (so that they stay locked) and see if 4wd stops popping. That eliminated the whole "vacuum" thing from the equation for the sake of testing. If it still clunks, bangs, or pops, you need IWEs.

I worked on my 4x4 system in my 2006 Super Crew Lariat with 164K miles recently. I had two problems. A broken IWE on the drivers side and also my vacuum hoses/lines were pretty packed with dust/dirt. I replaced the IWE and then blew out all the lines. You can raise the front off the ground. Start the engine and have a friend turn on and off the 4X4 while watching for the IWE's to engage and disengage.

Pulling the vacuum line may not work well, but pulling the electrical connector will as it will seal the vacuum line so that you are not sucking air and the hubs will engage unless rusted from sucking moisture. Regardless of the problem make sure to cut some plastic to make a water shield for the vacuum switch on the firewall.
