Interested in truck...need input
Im looking at trading my 99 Ranger in and getting a 04 F-150 supercab. Its a 4.6l with auto. STX model with ac. 83,xxx miles. There looking for $9,500. Has manual windows/locks and mirrors. Unsure of gearing. 4x4 also. Not even sure of bed size. Anyway, what else would I be missing out on with the STX? Do they have rear disc's? Any input? Looking for important things that might not be thinking of (weaker/smaller tranny, bad motor, weaker axle, different suspension?) Im guessing its a stripped model but dont want to sacrafice drivetrain to save a few bucks.

The STX model is just a trim package for the f150. In other words the base truck is the same as an FX4 or King Ranch. Just different groups of options and yes the rear brakes are disc.
I'm 92% sure I'm correct on this. Someone will be along soon to confirm. Hopefully we'll be welcoming you to the owners club soon. in the mean time welcome to the forum.

Inaugural TOTM
First thing I'd do is try and talk them down a little on the price, seems a little steep for a almost 5 year old truck with high mileage, 4.6l and manual controls.
Second thing I'd do is get the spark plugs changed if it still has the OEM plugs. The 04+ models have a problem with plugs breaking off inside the heads leaving owners with a sometimes expensive repair bill.

I've looked at several dealers and the price is right. $2500-$3000 less than most and others have 100,000+ miles. KBB says its worth roughly $13,000. The key however, is that the dealership is going to give me $5000 for my Ranger. Thats on the higher end of the scale. I have $2000 in cash so I would finace a little less than $3000. Power windows I may miss but thats it. Like the stepside beds but cant find one reasonably priced. Maybe I can swap it out later? There are several good deals on some older models but the coil sprung suspension has me sold. I've played the torsion bar game long enough. As far as the spark plugs, thats the info I need. Thank you. I will make sure they are swapped prior to purchase. It has a cai already. Looks clean except the front seats which apparently stain very easy. Im sure they sell seat covers though. There's a guy rolling around town with a supercrew fx4 stepside. Rollin on 37's. Took a 5 min conversation with him to set me on an 04+ i however wont be rolling on anything bigger than 33's (for now). Already have a 2 1/2" level spacer picked and a nice catback lined up. Also some sweet FX4 wheels from a buddies old truck (05) that was totalled (he had some procomps on when it rolled). I just need a truck. I work a little backwards I guess. Keep the input coming. Anything that will help pick out a truck.

Went and test drove today. Got to say Im dissapointed. My 6 cyl ranger will move better than that truck. And its turning 33's. I really hope it's the 4.6l thats the issue. Checked the axle code which says code 19 (3.55 open diff) so thats not helping. There is no way that thing would turn a set of 33's without some changes. I also drove an 05 with a 5.4l and 4.11's and that thing moves. So I have decided to save some more and get a different truck. Are all 4.6l that doggy? I mean it wouldnt spin a tire and it seemed to want to blowup before it would shift. I understand its not a race car but I would think there would be a better acceleration curve? Also the manual window cranks are difficult to reach. Too low and into the seat. Im going to have to get some power ones. I cant wait to get one. So much more room than the ranger. Kinda makes me feel a little more of a man (lol). No tach either. Guess Im gonna need a xlt or an fx4. Also do these come with rear window defrost or heated mirrors? Those would be nice up here to (NH).

ive got an 08 screw with the 4.6 and 3.73 gears and i think it drives fine. I test drove both the 5.4 and 4.6 in an identical truck and gearing and honestly the seat of the pants feeling wasnt much different. im not towing a whole lot so i went for the smaller motor for gas mileage.

new to the site, but just wanted to let you know, i have an '08 STX with power EVERYTHING and a 4.6, im turning 33's NO PROBLEM.
You don't need to re-gear in our trucks until you go bigger than 35's.

I test drove another 4.6 yesterday and it was much better than the previous one. There must have been something wrong with that first one because it was really slow and had no acceleration. The last one had a 4.6 w/auto and 3.73 gears. Do the rear extra cab windows open or roll down on any of the 04/05 models? Everyone I've looked at all appear fixed. I've got my mind set on one of these trucks. Will be an 04 or 05. Which model Im not sure of though. Found a supercrew stepside I love but it's a little out of my price range.
