It's not going to hurt anything. If its getting fresh air through the cowl, you're probably a push for stock performance. If its breathing hot air from under the hood you're going to lose some degree of power.

Also, do yourself a favor and DONT put a K&N filter in it. They don't filter worth a crap, and they'll foul the MAF with oil residue. I put one in my first 7.3 years ago, and several months down the road I pulled the filter and noticed a coating of dust in the intake tube.
Two days ago my son bought a used F150 with a K&N and we noticed the same thing. We cleaned the MAF and temp sensor, and then promptly S-canned the filter.

Fair enough. I will however continue to blame them for the dust in the intake tube (and engine obviously ), which is by far the greater evil.
