idle issues after cam phaser job... please help
#11
The boots can degrade over time. The springs inside the boots can corrode. The boots can even form to the specific position and sparkplug they were on, so when you change that, moisture can enter and cause corrosion. Good idea on cleaning the coil contacts. To be honest though, if your getting codes for different cylinders, and both banks, I doubt that would be the issue. Have you checked all your connections to ground? It's a long shot sure, but a possibility.

Ok. It's all back together again. It runs great until it's warm. Once it is warm it runs rough and Will even stall when in gear at idle. What gives? I get no codes thrown by the ECU anymore at all so no help there.

Help! Please!
Did you ever figure out what was going on??? Mine is doing the same exact thing. Did everything you have done for checks. Even replaced the vvt solinoids.. to waste money I guess because I too have the lockouts, no tune though. Thought maybe. Just maybe one broke and was shorting or closed or who knows.

Aren't those codes related to the O2 sensors? As for not using a tune, I'm not sure what it does, but the ECU will tell you it can't advance or retard timing.

Correct. That's the codes and definition of them. And it does act like it's going lean idling like complete crap and stalling. I flushed the oil 2 times. And it now is clean. Ran really well for 33 miles. Then the engine started shaking violently like it was missing horribly. So I bought an edge evolution cts2 tuner. Downloaded the stock flash for my truck. Since I never got the tuner from the guy I bought it from (Long story, Shady sob) flashed the truck. Searched for codes, i can't remember all of them... Cylinder c/3 miss fire was one. So I changed that coil with a different coil and it said c/3 again. So. I changed the spark plug. Same thing. Checked the injectors. Same thing. It really idled rough and sometimes I'd get different cylinders saying miss fires. Randomly. Drove it around the block slowly accelerating. And tried to give it some gas and it just dogged. Brought it home before stranded and read codes. It throws the cam phaser advance codes. Which is expected. That's what the lockouts do. Drove it around the block the next day. It back fired in the intake. And. No brakes. Knew right away I had a vacuum leak from that hose under the intake manifold in back. So I tore all that off. And put it back on. I now have brakes. No other codes. Just them 2 saying both banks are lean. Idling rough. Stalling. Dying. Sorry for the long run down. Just don't know what the heck is going on. I'm about done with this smoke machine I'm building. So hopefully I see something tomorrow when I blow smoke up it's *****. If not then I'm at a loss. Would it even drive if it jumped a tooth? Or if the chain was stretched? I'm not hearing any noise from the front. I do hear a knock noise under the driver side valve cover

Same issue - did anyone solve?
Curious if anyone ever figured out your problem? I just replaced both cam phasers on my F150 - I chose not to do the lockouts. After replacing the truck idled and ran like crap so I tore it all apart, did a complete timing job - new chains, guides, tensioners - put it all back together. Truck ran super smooth at first startup, which lead me to believe that timing was perfect, then after it warmed up it idled and ran like crap again. Replaced all plugs, springs, and boots - truck ran great at high rpm then but still idled like crap. Hoping you found the miracle solution! Thanks!
