That's funny...my '04 XLT doesn't have an MPG readout. Maybe yours is a Lariat or FX4?
Anyway, mine's not a daily driver. It's 9 years old and has only 60K on it. I drive it from Denver to Utah and Arizona for backpacking trips and vacations, so it goes over some big mountain passes getting there and back.
2 people and about 500 pounds of stuff in the back, cruising at 80 MPH and it gets 17 MPG every single time. I would imagine that it might get 19 if I drove alone with nothing in the bed...it's completely stock, even the airbox
I love my truck, it's been flawless. I paid cash for it and will only consider a new one if it will get me at least 25 MPG with these trips I do. That's the only way it would be worth it...purely from a dollars and cents point of view.
I've never bother to estimate the city MPG...I would guesstimate that it's probably around 14, as I drive it pretty easy.

My 04 fx4 supercrew has rancho quicklift struts and rear shocks, 33" trail grapplers, k&n drop in filter, and the gotts mod and get about 12.5 average with 75% city driving. I definitely don't feather the gas at all though

I've been using an app to get my mileage and it's showing an average of 16.01 mpg. That's mixed city/highway. Where I live it's a lot of "highway" roads but depends on when you're driving on them if you're going to be moving like a highway.
For people that don't have a read out on the truck itself I've been using an app called Road Trip Lite (free version). It's pretty cool and easy to use and plug the info in. I've only been using it for about 4 tanks now but I recommend it if you have a smart phone.
Edit: Forgot to mention 04 5.4 stock

remember that in 04', that estimate was using gasoline without ethanol... you lost like 15% mpg just by adding 10% ethanol... at least, that was my results when testing with a montero sport when i was still able to decide between buy in a gas station with ethanol and another with 10% ethanol.
