Oh, and contrary to the comment of 04-08 owners being teenagers, I dis-agree. I am 41....lol.

I would take those to a shop that could weld a nut on them.

I've helped others with issues I've had experience with or offer suggestions of things to try. Do I know everything? Not at all and I'll be the first to admit it. Also my truck wasn't handed down to me. I worked for the truck I got and everything that has been added to it.

OP: best bet would be to get someone to weld a nut to it. I can't really think of an alternative to that. Other than that you could possibly get a bolt, beat the head through the hole and glue it in with construction adhesive (brown tube found at walmart for like $5). It shouldn't be able to pull out of the step again and wouldn't need to be welded.
