I just towed a 4400 lb fully loaded Uhaul from LA to VA, 80mph the whole way with overdrive on. A few hills I was lugging with my 35's but not many. My eFans did kick *** though.
I pull this trailer every Saturday. 3200 lbs empty and depending upon the horses about 5200 lbs full.
My 2004, 5.4, 2WD, Lariat with 20" OEM wheels (from a 2006 F150), towing mirrors, Gryphon, Gotts mod, Bilstein shocks (stock height), 3.55 rear ratio and well maintained drive train pulls it easily. Of course, with two horses in the trailer, I need to drive it conservatively.
My next project is a rear camera for my weekly trailer connections.

I know a good transmission guy. PM me. Seriously though, to the OP, be careful not to gravitate towards the posts that tell you what you want to hear. I did that to some degree and I wish I hadn't. For every guy who has successfully towed over limit loads are probably equal number who have lost a tranny towing within limits.
2006 SCrew 5.4 3.73 axle with stock tow package
Towed my 8000+ lbs 31ft RV only about two hours through hills in Missouri. Trans never got above 160 degrees. Gas mileage sucked, around 10-11 but pulled without a problem.
