The guys here reccommend SCT mainly, mine is comin...I am sure NGM or Obs. could explain it better. My CAI helped out too alot until I put my exhaust on...

Driving habits will be the biggest issue....

17mpg sounds pretty good to me. Ive got a 08, 5.4 SCAB 4x4 and all I can get is around 13.5 to 14!! Gets tough at the pumps, but it doesnt matter to me really, because I need a full size 4x4 PU, and I happen to love my F-150!! Good Luck though, because advice wouldnt hurt my feelings at all!! Ive been told by others to just drive less!! Not much of an option to me though!!

AS our presidential candidates recommend, keep the tires inflated (they would know; full of hot air); avoid "jackrabbit" starts, keep the air cleaner clean, kill the air conditioner whenever possible. The above mentioned mods help too; problem is that folks usually can't keep their foot off of the gas pedal with the newfound performance and sound! I'm amazed here in the Dallas Texas area with the pick-up truck drivers; they all gotta pass you by and show off the exhaust tunes. I let them go by....I'd rather get there 5 minutes later and save a few gallons of gas.
Those may net you an extra 1-2 MPG. Otherwise, enjoy the fact that 17 MPG is quite good for that V8. I have the 4.2 liter V6; I don't haul heavy loads or trailers, but like the ride and size of a pickup. Otherwise I'd be driving one of those small econo boxes (yuck!). My V6 nets me right at 21-23 on the highway, and about 18-19 in the stop-go city driving. Not bad for a heavy sled.

Just remember any "Mods" you purchase for fuel mileage negate the savings. For example. If you spend 1200.00 in mods and net 1.5MPG better it will take a couple of years or better to recoup the loss. So the best thing for better MPG is the basic maintenance on your truck and drive conservatively.
