How to get better fuel mileage?
I am a new member and this is my first post. I own a 05 ext cab 4x4 with 5.4. My first question is how do I get better fuel mileage? Does a K&N or chip/programmer or other after market mods help? I am averaging about 16 mpg. Any recomendations are appreciated.

16mpg thats not too bad, this being my first real tank of gas since I only have 600 miles on my truck and still in the break in period I only got about 13mpg but I just put in the K&N and I have the Airraid MIT (Modular Intake Tube) and the Street and Perfromance Electronics TBS comeing so I hope they will hepl out.

I clean my airfilter, maf sensor and change my fuel filter about every 10k miles and I still have yet to get 16 mpg. I drive 25 miles to work mostly all highway and I only average 14.5 mpg. I am jealous of your 16mpg

Exactly what I was thinking when I saw it.
Anyways, if you want better fuel mileage don't buy any mods because you'll never recoup the money you spend in those mods because at best you might get an extra 1 or 2 mpg's. Instead for better fule mileage simply drive the truck like your grandma would, seriously.
It's a big, heavy truck, not a jap import! 16 mpg's is pretty good actually depending on where you drive (highway vs stop-n-go) and how you drive (heavy footed vs feathering). That's normally what I was seeing prior to lifting mine and I did mostly highway driving. I'd see the occassional 19 to 20 mpg if I did 100% highway driving, but for the most part I was down around 15 to 17 mpg.
Hope that helps.

16 is great in mixed city/highway driving. I keep my tires filled to the max which helps with the mpg. I air down often for various reasons, mostly fishing but try to max out again as soon as I can.
