How can I tell what cylinder is misfiring, no codes?
My 2005 f150 has an intermittent misfire. It is not enough to trip a CEL or even to trip a pending code. I don't know why it won't because it is pretty much constant. I have had it at a shop twice having them hook their computer that graphs the cylinders out. Well now here I am $180 later and still having the misfire. Is there anyway for me to tell which cylinder is misfiring without taking it back? Any scanners that aren't thousands? I have an actron CP9180 but that won't tell me anything unless it trips a code. Thanks for any help.

Yes! If have an android phone, you can get the ELM OBD2 dongle off Amazon for $25 bucks, and the Torque App for $5 bucks, and it will give you all the info you need, as well as read codes when they fire, and clear them...works well.

why not do a tune up...plugs and COP's and be done with it ...

I didn't think it would cost this much for the shop to scan it. It has fresh plugs. In retrospect I wish I would've just bought a set of coils. But not much I can do now.

@ Prof,
Are you sure it can graph cylinders that are giving no codes?
Also is there an apple version? Or else I can download it on my girlfriends phone if there is no apple option.

Change your COP's and be done with it. Taking it to most shops is a waste of time and money because the majority of them are lost and have no clue what to do unless the scanner gives them a direct fault on a direct cylinder. Mechanics are not what they used to be. A misfire on a modular that's not throwing a "retard" code is most always a faulty COP.

The Torque app I think works with apple or android, as long as it has Bluetooth? The dongle I use is just for android currently, but there's some dongles that will work with apple, they are just pricier...
