How can I tell if my wheel bearing is bad

None so far. I went out to the drive way and pulled the wheel off to check the hub and again there was no play whatsoever in the hub. I did notice that I had left my sway bar end links about 3-4 threads too loose so I tightened those hoping by chance it had worked. That of course was not the problem. I just had it aligned when I replaced the ball joints and they didn't get the wheel straight so I'm going to take it to them to realign and diagnose then I'll just fix it myself

When my front bearing went bad, the only thing noticeable was a roaring sound at highway speeds, similar to running big mud treads. There was no slop/wiggle in the bearing.

Thanks mulestang that's really what I've been wondering. So I have two questions: did it always wobble or just at certain speeds and since I am unable to listen for it on the highway how else can I tell if it's bad. Thank you in advance

I think it was a sympathetic bearing failure. I needed new brakes/rotors, so I ordered the centric front hub conversion for 2WD trucks. The next day, the sound started LOL. There was never any wobble. The sound was very pronounced between 55 and 65 mph. I thought it was tire related, so I rotated them - no change. When I had the front left wheel off to begin the hub conversion, I noticed the existing rotor was very hard to turn, compared to the front right. After the conversion, noise was gone. Hence, my belief it was a bad bearing.

It's probably your hub/wheel bearing assembly. Just buy some new ones. That's what I've ordered for my truck. It makes a slight grinding noise at low speeds when the steering wheel is cranked at full lock and vibrates the steering wheel a bit on the highway going 50mph+.
It's a very simple job.

Did the wheel bearings and checked the brakes. Still making the noise but much more subtle again. Unfortunately I think it's the pinion bearing so I'll be going back in.
I'm beginning to wonder if the unbalanced tire I had on there (Les Schwab refused to balance) did the number. I actaully rotated it from the front to the rear to be safe. I drove it for close to about 1,500 known miles before I found a machine I could use and get it sorted out. About 10,000 miles later the sound started and here we are.

Did you replace both upper and lower ball joints ?
