I tow a 28 center console for short distances. It weighs about 8500lbs and towed a vette for about 1000 miles non-stop. The 5.4 has enough power to pull the boat out of the ramp. My tranny died at 125k don't know how much if at all the towing contributed to its demise. What it cannot do on its own is stop when towing the boat. You will need a trailer with brakes if towing above 4k.

FWIW, to the OP, if your truck didn't have the towing package from the factory, you will want to add the bigger trans cooler, 7 pin harness, and add a trailer brake controller and harness. Upgrading brakes is a good idea too.
On the how big of a boat issue. It all depends on the weight. I have seen some 30' fishing boats that weight wise my old Ranger could have easily handled, and some 21' cabin cruisers my F150 would struggle with. The fishing boats of coarse being all aluminum construction, the cruiser being wood and fiberglass with LOTS of extra crap just weigh too much. Guess which boat drafts deeper?
