You kids need to do it right....
I have FXR projectors and TFS ballasts. Using their relay harness, put an end on the solenoid for the cutoff shield and everything is properly fused and grounded. Have been on the truck for 2+ years with zero issues. No fuses blown, truck starts/runs/drives.
IT JUST WORKS.
The cheap ballasts:
Introduce loads of noise into your electrical system
Interfere with your FM radio
Quality is hit or miss
Do not come with proper relay harness, YOUR STOCK HEADLIGHT PLUGS SHOULD NOT BE USED TO PROVIDE POWER TO THESE EVER.
Require some basic knowledge to install
Should not be used in a scenario where you have DRL/Auto headlamps as the voltage fluctuations can kill them or your HID bulb.
Serve as great thread starters to show what doesn't work.
I am not trying to be an a-hole here, but cutting corners always results in rework and half-assery. The cost to produce when rework is introduced is at least 2.5x the cost of doing it right the first time. Your time and effort is worth something. I don't know about you but I hate do-overs to fix a problem that still remains underlying once the do-over is complete.

Yes these are excellent points especially with the noise! I've seen on a Can am atv where the ballasts were introducing so much noise the machine wouldn't run right. The reason being is it was affecting the ECM. Wiring directly to the battery in that case and using relays to control it was the easy solution. Most kits should have that similar style though I'd hope but I have no idea what's in the cheap kits.
I also had mine for a few years with no issues but I did some changes as well. My only thing is I don't think I'd do it in factory housings again because I feel like a jerk blinding others on the road. Sounds like they may tighten up in British Columbia anyways.

There is a how-to on f150online that I followed to mount my projectors. It isn't a project for the faint of heart. There a few dudes here that build them. They are money, but done right with quality parts. The Retrofit Source I believe also provides installation services as well.

i got an hid kit for my truck about a month n a half ago, it was fine for about 2 weeks, then the passenger side ballast went bad. they sent me a new ballast, but now my high beams dont work. does it need a relay inline with these kits? none of my vehicles in the past needed a relay.
Although, the 2x kits i purchased for my pontiac grand prix gtp comp g were worth every 3,000 pennies.
