I have to think it may be time for cats. Does anyone know if the expeditions have the fpdm problem?

What about the fuel pump? Don't they get weak around 110k miles? Or do they last longer?

Thanks for all the post guys. As for my issue, the only code I have is the dreaded P0420 and P0420 pd. A shop confirmed that those codes are for the CATs and I read a lot about those issues online and in this forum. That was a free diagnostics, may go to an indy shop to get them to test which specific CAT is messed up.

I will inspect the air intake box first. Then see if any of the wirings are messed up. I am hesitating on doing the CATs as they are really expensive.

Anyone ever use aftermarket CATs? A shop had indicated that if the Expy has CATs in which the O2 sensors plug into it, an aftermarket will not work. Even direct CATs are up there and may want to do that myself to save on labor.

While all this is going on, my other vehicle messed up because the coolant reservoir had a leaked. Coolant leaked on top of the engine block, causing a short, 3 coils and 6 plugs replaced. Paid $500+ to get diagnostic and repairs. Got that car back for only one day and now it will not start....ugh! Luckily, they did a 2nd free diagnostic and said it was just the battery not holding a charge and not sending enough voltage to start the car.

Anyways, all these going on while we are in the middle of trying to close on a house. RIDICULOUS. When it rains, it pours!

Thanks for all the inputs again and it appears that this is a common issue with the 5.4l engines. I was lucky enough to get those plugs out without one single one breaking.

Default Ford Expedition Hiccup problem solved

I recently purchased my 2012 Ford Expedition with 170k miles on it, otherwise in perfect condition would hiccup or jerk while going at around 45-55 mph, while trying to accelerate gently, or going up a slope. To me it felt like something was wrong with the transmission but I researched on the net and found various answers. From possible transmission to spark plugs, coils and boots and talk about rebooting, which I still am not sure what that all means.

Anyway, I decided to have the oil changed as it seemed like the logical first step and if nothing else, it would be good preventative measure.

I went down to the transmission shop, where I discussed the same, and the gentleman suggested everything I had read about it being possibly the spark plugs or the coils and may need to be rebooted and if that were possible i could save some, figures were thrown around in the range of $700 to a $1000, ouch. I hoped the oil would changed something but at this point was convinced i needed the spark plugs coils etc.

Well I tell you what... I left the shop that day and after driving a few minutes felt a significant change in the shifting and no more jerking. I could not believe it, i have since driven 3 days, on level and inclines, in slow speed, high speed, trying to replicate the issue, and its been running fine, none of that annoying jerking and hesitation....for me the solution was a simple change of transmission oil. It never made sense to me, why spark plugs would be an issue when you press the accelerator gently and not when you shifted down hard and with higher rpms, so im not surprised it turned out to be the tranny.

I would not bring my vehicle to some of the quick lube places, well first of all mine has a sealed transmission, no dipstick, and needs a tranny shop, so find a reputable one, and get the oil changed before you start ripping out your coils or whatever. Again, this worked for me, so I thought I would share this with everyone.... Good luck.

I have a 2006 F150 with a 5.4 and had the same issue.
Truck has 135,000 miles on it.
spark plugs were changed (motorcraft) at 93,000
serviced the transmission, didn't fix it.
new fuel filter, didn't fix it.
cleaned throttle body, didn't fix it.


I put a new set of coil over plugs (COP) and the issue was resolved.
