How many miles on the engine?

The bearing Clearances may be to loose and once the oil gets thin the pump is not able to operate the VCT w

i bought my truck from a guy who just paid $2000 to have his phasers replaced because it had a startup rattle and it didn't fix it. obviously. so I got the timing cover off and both my tensioner gaskets are blown and both guides are broken. so can I replace the guides and tensioners without screwing up my timing and removing the chains? because I don't feel comfortable with removing the chains.. too much room for error there. thanks.

Just rotate the engine until the timing marks line up on the phasers and the crank sprocket. Then replace the tensioners and guides. You should be able to do it without taking the chains off the cams or crank. If it does slip slightly, you won't have to move the crank or cam far to get it back into position.

We just finished doing our timing yesterday. We replaced everything(phasers, chains, guides, VCT, sensors). The truck started but it sounded a little rough. We turned it off and now it won't start at all. Any suggestions?

Hey I'm running into the exact same issue. Did you end up fixing the issue?

Default 05 f150 5.4l 3v timing issue

Every engine has its strong and weak points.

This should be a good example of what to say when the dealer says "oil pressure is low at the top end... need a new engine"

Or

"Cam phasers started making noise 2 months later"

I dont care how old the phasers are, they are Hydraulic... If you have a blown seal or worn out tesionser (WHICH IS VERY, VERY COMMON GUYS)
your oil pressure is low to them they will rattle.

But please people, this and the other proof ends the cam phaser mystery.

They do fail, yes. but noise is often not the phasers fault.

Dont waste your money changing a pair of phasers, there are other forces at work here

I have done at least 5 of these and have not had a customer come back, cause I change all parts that could be at fault.

PM me if anyone has any questions, and if you have noise, fix it before it becomes a real big problem

Hi, I was hoping that someone would have some insight to what is wrong with my truck. I have an 05 F150 5.4l 3v. I had a misfire awhile back with codes so I replaced the vct solenoids, spark plugs, coils, and cam phasers. It solved the problem. Then a few months down the road I had total power loss while driving and discovered I had a bad alternator and battery, so I replaced both the alternator and battery. It solved the problem. Then another month down the road and my truck started making rattling noises while driving. No codes at all. I figured it must be the timing chain. So I bought the timing kit and when I went to replace the components I noticed that there was a loose chain and a blown tensioner. So I replaced it all. 2 chains, crank sprocket, 2 guides, 2 tensioner arms, 2 tensioners, timing gasket kit and all. Somehow I must have gotten the timing wrong because upon completion it started and ran perfect untill I drove it the next day. It is so much worse than when I started. Still no codes. It idles ok, but when driving at low and high speeds it is wanting to die and making louder rattling sounds. It seems terrible to drive this way so I have parked it but need it running soon. Please help if you have any ideas. Tomorrow I am going to go back in there and I guess redo it all and hope I find where I went wrong. The only thing I noticed was that I got the tensioners mixed up and installed them on the wrong sides. They seem to be the exact same part though and I'm not sure how to re compress them to swap them to the right sides. Any ideas would help. Especially on how to properly time it. Thanks.

Default Well how about using the old metal tensioners for one thing

They don't have seals to blow out and they ratchet to hold chains until oil pressure comes up .
Next is the valve train, rollers and lash adjusters are a large part of the problem . Lash adjusters over 100k are iffy and rollers go bad too . Pull your cams the correct way and inspect them all . Oem select ebay has them for $265.
Keep all old parts on valve train in order they must go back exactly where they came out . New stuff exempt . New lash adjusters must be primed and soaked .
Most of us put a new melling oil pump in either a 340 or 360 . Clean pan and pickup screen real well . Clean vct bodies and vcts .
most parts must be oem especially phasors and vcts . whole timing kit oem select ebay $798. View ford malukoco videos you tube .

You can buy a cheaper timing kit from a "no name" company but for 40$ more the cloves is nice. I have also seen the phasers for $119.00
If they fail they ratchet up instead of down,
