I mentioned you check the alternator bearing back on the 22nd...it won't get any better, and chances are it will get progressively worse. It could also be the AC compressor's bearing as you suggested.

I've seen other posts on this forum with people looking for answers to the same problem with no definitive answers.

Your post on the 22nd backed up by the last poster along with my own trial and error stuff make me think this is what it is. (From your other posts I get the impression that you know what your talking about but I couldn't go to the dealer complaining about a noise they never heard and ask them to do something without at least a few matching optionions on what's wrong.) Now I have to decide what to ask the dealer to do about it. Do I ask them to replace the generator or can just the bearing be replaced?

Just wanted to let everyone know that I was able to convince my dealer to replace my alternator. I printed this thread along with 3 others from this forum from people all complaining of the same issue. Each thread pointed to the bearing in the alternator. It turns out that the tech that was working on my truck has the same problem with his truck and knew exactly what I was talking about so even though he was not able to reproduce the sound in my truck, he was able to talk to Ford and get my Alternator replaced. I don't know if this will fix the issue as it is a like replacement but now at least I have a record of the issue so after this summer when my warranty runs out I won't have to worry about it next winter if I should happen to hear it again.

Thank you all for your help.

I have had my truck for the third winter now and mine does it every time it is cold outside. I have narrowed it down as well to the alternator. It has not gotten worse and I am sure it is not the AC compressor. It is very annoying and trying to explian it to passengers is just as annoying as the sound. I will eventually replace the alternator but untill reading this thread I was not 100% sure. Even then with the price ford wants for an alternator I think I will wait. Has anyone ever tried to fix the alternator?

Default Alternator Bearing

If it actually is the alternator bearing you can do what I have been doing for several years and just remove the alternator and replace the bearings. I remove the bearings and take them to a bearing store to have them matched. NAPA is also a great source for automotive bearings. Don't go to the Ford Service and Parts Center. They will just look at you like you have the plague.

mine was doing the same thing its an 08 screw with only 13 000km on it . the noise keep on getting worse then i notices at a stop light the truck was getting harder to turn the wheels i took it to the dealer ship and told them i wanted the power steering pump changed under warenty they told me there was nothing wrong with itbut what the hell do i know. sometimes I dont even think the take your truck for a ride when u take it in with a proble if it starts and drives into the shop its good enough for them . It finally crapped out with 14 500km then they had to change it.

Thumbs up My whine just fixed...

Just purchased a used 2006 F-150 XL 5.4 Triton with 40K on it, there was an intermittent high pitch whine at cruising speed, went away under load, worse at colder temperatures. I noticed this during my test drive and they agreed to fix it. Alternator replaced and no more whining, (except for the wife and kids...)

Cheers!

I have an 05 SuperCrew, does the same thing when its under 35 degrees. Drove me nuts this entire winter. I replaced the Belt, but it still continued. I will be swaping my alternator out in a few weeks once winter is over. Boy am I glad to be putting this behind me its been driving me nuts!

My truck was built 6/08. I've got a whine from the drive train on deceleration only while in 4x4. This occurs at all speeds. When I'm on the gas it goes away. When I am on the brakes it goes away. It's a whine exactly as described by the original poster, but happens only on decel in 4x4 at all speeds. Don't know if anyone can relate. I consider this normal... well, rather, I am not concerned about it.

yeah i got the same problem, i posted a thread on this and i have had many people tell me that it is due to the weatherstripping on the front of hte truck, but i was convinced that it was engine related. here is the link to the thread i posted on this problem https://www.f150forum.com/f4/2004-f150-5-4-whinning-sound-18764/
