Careful I might hold you to that. On the bright side the hub has a lifetime warranty...so when it goes again all I have to do is pay for the labour, peace of mind I guess.

Hi I'm new to this site so hopefully I'm not jumping the gun on posting, but I have a 2005 F140 Fx4 and mine started doing a similar thing last year around 30,000 miles.

Turns out mine was the IWE solenoid. Apparently fords original design allowed moisture to get into the solenoid and cause the system to half engage and grind. It would stop if I switched it into four wheel while driving. I replaced the solenoid myself and the new part has a hood over it to block the moisture.

I know you said yours continues after your 4x4 is engaged but maybe check yours out and If there is no "hood" device over it then this maybe this contributed to the problem?

Hope this helps,
Zach

ZStrawn, at first I did consider the IWE but, the noise would not go away in 4wh and would go away around a turn. As stated earlier I had it fixed today,it was the bearing. And costly it was.

Oh, and welcome to the site. Just joined myself and already meeting good people.

Thanks for the nice welcome to the site. Haha I'll be careful to monitor myself (or pay closer attention) next time. I guess I was a little excited to post my first comment!

Default Same problem

I have a 04 f150 fx4. I had the grinding noise 2 years ago and replaced the IWE solenoid. Well it just started making the noise again and almost all the time. I didn't hear the noise when locking it in to 4wh. I'm hoping to be able to fix the problem on my own.

Megan, if your old solenoid was bad and you didn't change out the iwe's yet, they're bad. Just did both of mine and one was broken in half. Broke the shaft and hub teeth too.

I just replaced the IWE again because it would not go into 4wd. If i tried to lock it in it would make a horrible loud pop. After I change the IWE still made the noise, but it will now go into 4wd. I then replaced the hubs (DRiver Side was Messed up, passenger side was ok). It does not make the noise in 4wd. I'm at a loss of what it could be. It makes me wonder if I received a bad iwe.
