Default Grease in rim

I was doing a tire rotation today and when i took off the back passenger side tire i noticed the inside of the rim was covered in grease. I cleaned it off and put it back on. Im going to check back in a week or so. Any ideas?

Grease, or oil? If it's a thick oil, you may have a bad end axle seal, allowing the rear end (differential fluid) leaking on that side. Were the brake pads and caliper also coated? May have just been a sloppy tire changer if you recently had new tires installed (although they usually just use soapy water on the rim lip to help get the tire on).

Get it checked. Don't want the differential fluid getting low; expensive repair.

I agree with the real axle seal leaking. I had one changed out about 3 months ago.

Good deal. Hopefully you had them top off (or replace) the rear end fluid.

Sounds like I am having the same problem. Just noticed tonight that the inside of the rim on the passenger side rear tire is covered in greasy dirt and thick chunks of grease were around the brakes. Is the differential fluid that thick that it looks like grease when it leaks out?

If any of you had the the axle seal repaired in a shop, would you mind sharing approximately how much it cost? Seems like a rather complex fix for an amateur.

Ditto here on the 04 with a leaky seal. Mine isn't that bad yet but the driver's side axle end has a stain. Check fluid and still full. How much does the seal replacement run?
