Gears = higher tow rating????
I currently have the 5.4L with 3.55 gears and 35's....it came with 17's.....my max trailer weight is 8300lbs(more like 7500lbs with 35's)........
If i went with say 4.10's or 4.56's would it get my tow rating back up to stock or maybe a little bit higher???? I pull 3 quads on my tandem axle trailer(not sure on weight) and i just don't want to hurt the truck

i would go with 4.10 if you dont haul daily. it would be a good mix and give you more low end and not kill your mileage. it might bring it up a tad from what you have now.

alot of it depends on your tranny, i have 355 gears too but they get real low behind a 4 spd bulldog, i have video proof if you need it, its so low i dont even use my 1st gear in 2wd even when i'm pulling 3 ton behind it, its just that low with that tranny

all the gears really do is change your RPM's at a certain speed due to you tire size, so you wont "gain power" but it will let your trucks power get the ground more efficently.

what he said...all it does is change the amount of horse power getting to the wheels, now, if i had a 5spd i would get about 5mpg more but i would lose that power getting to my wheels, not alot but enough to have to start using 1st gear.

okay kool....so let me see if i get it.......it doesn't really matter which gears i go with because it won't really make my rating go up it will really just get me as close as i can to stock and be able to pull like i used to be able too???

if youve got 355s, just go back factory, or, if you do alot of offroad or towing, and dont mind getting a few less mpg's, get a 4spd bulldog, if not go back factory, get a tow package put in your tranny and your good to go

yes you usually try to get back to stock with a gear swap. if you go a little taller than what the stock setup you will have more low end power but get less MPG. i would go with 4.10's if you just do ocassional towing to save MPG.
