A good tuneup is about the best you can do, if it needs one. I'm getting 8-9 mpg right now, waiting for spring so I can do plugs......

Hell, I did a rear end service on my truck an saw a increase in mileage. Tires do help out with mileage. Make sure you keep them inflated, rotated and balanced. Air them to what the placard on you door jam says. Not what the sidewall of your tire says.

What's your mpg now? If it's 18 you're not going to do better, if it's 8 you can do better. I get 14 in the winter.

You probably won't get much better in the summer actually. What engine and drivetrain was your dads 89? We had a 1990 F150 with the 300 I6 and 2wd which would get 18-19mpg. Those old trucks were also a lot lighter, not as much sound deading or crash bars.

definitely suggest the tuner. I used the Superchips and gained about 5 or so in the city, even with 37s

You need to re-calibrate your speedo for the larger tires.
It is impossible to put a larger more aggressive tire on a truck and get 4-5 mpg's better.
