Default Front end shimmy

Some FYI for all you guys...on a recent freeway trip I felt a fair amount of shimmy in the front end develope out of the blue. Seemed to get better when slowing below 65 (that was the worst part!!). After a while it smoothed out. Of course I thought it must have been something on a tire or I threw a wheel weight. On the return trip it happened again while going down the freeway. Again it smoothed out after about 5 miles. The next day after a 40 mile drive I noticed a burning rubber smell...quite strong. So...took it to the dealership today as it was due for oil and rotate. Turns out the shimmy was caused by a broken left front caliper piston. So...if you get a shimmy out of the blue and smell burning rubber. Check your brakes. The weird thing was that I felt absolutely no problem with the brakes. (04 SCab FX4)

Something like that happened to a good friend of mine who has a 2001 f150. His caliper bolts broke and started rubbing the inside of his wheel!!!!! He started to hear a whine and sometimes growl so we started looking and found it. He said he never had brake problems either. Luckily we caught it in time before it wore a hole in the rim, but it did leave a nice gouge.

Wow, I have an appointment at my dealer to get my 05 looked at for a shimmy that just appeared one day after a tire rotation and balance. Seems to go away below 65 and goes away around gentle bends on the freeway. Only present when going straight.

I read your post after experiencing the same thing with my '05 F-150 supercrew. The Ford dealership put it up on the rack at my insistence, though the service manager had never heard of these symptoms. The left front caliper was cracked. Thanks for the post.
