Default Friend is thinking of buying a 06 4.6L

Just looking for some opinions on this engine. Buddy of mine found a 2006 4x2 4.6L xlt extended cab and is interested in buying it. The truck has just about 100,000km (60,000 miles) on it, dealer up here in canada wants $10,899 but I think he could get it for $10,000 if he plays his cards right. Body and everything looks to be in good shape and all the power options work. He won't be doing any heavy towing or hauling with it. Whats the overall verdict on these engines? How's the power? How are they on gas? Is this a good one to look into? Any advice is greatly appreciated!

10k is WAY too much for an underpowered 5yr old truck.

I paid 15k for my 07 scab xlt with 90 something thousand on the clock. But it was 4wd and a 5.4.

Yeah normally I would agree, but most trucks up here I've seen around that year and mileage sit close to the ten thousand dollar mark

I have an '05 STX SCAB 4X4 Edge EVO Gotts Mod 4.6L and I really like it, especially since I added the Edge programmer. The programmer gave me more options for power and gas mileage. I get around 15 mpg and up to 18 on a road trip. With 2WD he should get good mileage with decent power. Did not know they sold 2WD north of the Mason Dixon Line, let alone Canada lol. Had a 2WD car one time that set in the garage from Thanksgiving until Easter, needless to say all of our vehicles are 4WD now, even the ATVs.

As you can see by my sig. I own the 4.6 and don't do a great amount of hauling.
The 4.6 is underpowered in my opinion. It has enough power to get you around. A plus is a LS rear end and higher than a 3.55 ratio is a plus also. It depends what he wants to use it for. The slightly smaller engine does not get better gas mileage. Take it to an independent mechanic and have it checked out.

I have an 08 4.6 the "more powerful year" cough cough, yeh but it is a decent truck. I came from a diesel so I think it is slow as sin but it is alright. And it gets about 1mpg more than all the 5.4s my family has owned in f150s. It is about on par with my dads 09 f150 that has a 6 speed and gets 19mpg on the highway.

However my mom has a 06 5.4 and only get 16 on the highway.

Eitherway the 4.6 is a simpler motor too. Less complicated but it does have its trade offs. Mostly less power.

wont win races (like my old diesel) but i love my 4.6(2nd one i have owned) most reliable engine i have ever owned and i haul cars and tractors 5000 to 7500lbs including trailer and it does fine and i also get 20-21 mpg highway and 18 avg but i also baby it alot so... great motor...wont win to many races.... but gets job done and keeps running....just my opinion. i have owned both 5.4 and 4.6

Comparing my old 5.4 with 170,xxx miles to my 4.6 with a hair over 30k, I'd still stand by the power of the 5.4. The 4.6 is a great, reliable engine, but lacks the extra horsepower when you need it. There's only a few MPG difference between the two. I won't be buying another F150 with a 4.6.

4.6 is a great dependable engine. Has good power, its deft. not underpowered. Just depends on what you want or use to.

I like mine a lot, if I were to do it again tho I'd try to get the 5.4 but Im very happy with my 4.6
