Default Is it the flywheel or starter?

I have a 05 f150 lariat 4x4 with a 5.4l and sometimes when i try to start the truck it makes a loud noise and doesnt start. It is very seldom when it does it but i want to get it looked at. Someone told me it is either the starter or flywheel and he said it is probably the flywheel because the bad teeth that are making it not start are only catching when it doesnt start, if that makes any sense. Anybody know about this or had it happen? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

does it sound like a grinding sound? if so, then I would bet money it is your flywheel.

Suggest another possibility is the starter drive, or bendix, is not extending the starter gear into the flywheel fully.

If the loud sound you are referring to sounds like metal smacking metal...I believe is the starter as well.

You can pull the starter and have it bench tested to see if it works, if it does, have it tested again while on the truck and see if it pulls too much power.

Sounds like a bad spot on the bendix to me.
