fixing cam phasers and lash tensioners

I wouldnt think that they would change anything besides the actual part. I though i read somewhere it was updated, might just have thought it would be since the newer ones dont tick...if in fact the part WAS updated then it should be good to go with just an updated phaser in there...and the lash adujusters as well...

I agree with bossman's answer.
I've been checking everywhere I can and there is no difference in the part numbers. If they fixed the part then it is an update and ford just labeled it with the same part number.
Maybe with the 2006+ ford got people to use the 5w-20 oil. Anything else will **** things up. 10w-30 may stop the tick, but will kill your engine.

Its not like they would sll the old problem prone part anymore anyway so I'd think they would not change the part number in order to eleminate confusion and just trash all the old parts and restock with the redesigned component...I dont run anything but motorcraft 5w20 but the previous owner ran penzoil ...I think I just might take the plunge and try it when I have the cash and if they also fail ill tear ford a new one...

Have you removed the valve covers? Was there a lot of sludge?
These phasers don't seem to be really fix-able. If you have ever seen a new one; they are really fragile. I mean, you are using oil pressure to change the camshaft timing with these crazy things. I really don't think there is any difference, but I am far from being an expert at this. Just the way that the phaser operates. I don't think anything could be changed aside from changing the whole set-up (and with that the structure of the parts).

They actually added a pin that helps hold the phaser together. I can't remember exactly where the technician was showing me this when I got mine replaced but there were two pins that helped hold the gear part of the phaser together on the old part and the new one has three pins...I would have to have a picture of one to describe it better but that's the change that was made.

To answer that last post:
check out the link I provided on the 1st page and watch episode 17. Somewhere in there they give you some sound bytes of what good and bad phasers sound like. Listen carefully.
As far as the other engine noises, read the tsb that is about engine clicking and ticking (I can;t remember what the exact name of the tsb is but you can find it out there if you search). Basically if the other noises aren't too loud with the hood closed then you should be OK. Most ticking and clicking sounds should be localized around the front wheel wells when the hood is closed. The engine is a loud one.
My 05 5.4 makes all sorts of ticks and whatever but she runs real good and no loss of power from what I can tell. I give the engine a good listening to about once a month. Just run it from cold to warm and listen for any out-of-sync noises. All the ticking should be in time with basically the same amount of time between clicks, if that makes any sense.

i just replaced my phasers and the clicking went away. it only clicked at warm idle before. Ford wasnt being helpful in the process so i did it with a friend in 4 hours. but from the research ive done, use the recommened oil but make sure you use the motorcraft oil filter with the silicon valve in it which stops the oil from leaking back into the filter when the engine is shut off. it keeps oil in the heads to reduce friction upon startup on the cam phasers. dont know how true all of this is but this is my opinion from everything i have learned.
