Welcome friend, I would look into the trams cooler for sure. I had a friend with an 06 fx2 with same issues, was a combo of trans overheating and gearing to low. As far as the OD, I have never turned mine off except on inclines, 3 ford trucks, 97 v6 w/o tow package, 03 4.6 w/o tow package, and now an 07 5.4 w/ tow package. not one problem, but all were running higher ratios, the 03 and 07 are 3.73. Not sure bout the 97.

The only ford I had issues with was my moms 92 4.2l exploder. My boat was 5# under Max. Cottman put a heavy duty in it within 6 months of me driving it after blowing it up twice? Tranny fluid all over 2 intersections, had to 1st gear it back to the house, then no reverse.

I would also recommend a programmer with a good tow setting, most of our trucks lack a tow/haul button, to lengthen the amount of time it stays in the lower gears. The OD button just drops out 4th gear, and doesn't change the shift points much. I have an edge evo and love it, some use sct and others bully dog or super chips. There are whole threads dedicated to those guys though.

I would look at the cooler and programmer, before, re gearing. Those should be cheaper than gears. The tuners run generally about $350 on average new. Not sure about the coolers.

I have a picture, hitched up to my boat in my garage. To give you an idea of weight.

I think you should re-gear. 3.55 is too low if your towing that much weight that frequently. At least you don't have larger tires that would compound the issue. It is a little pricey, but so is rebuilding transmissions. 4.10 is what I'd go with. The trans cooler and programmer are also good ideas. But you add all that up, and it might cheaper and easier to get a different tow vehicle.

Kind of off topic, but I see people saying "exploder" a lot. Is it just spell check correcting "explorer" to "exploder" or is it a nickname to the explorer...?

First, Welcome ! I felt the same way, users just look and dont help in many cases, But when they need help they demand for HELP!! But at least we dont have the Smart Asses that i deal with in CumminsForum and FullsizeChevy. So thats a plus!

And WOW iv never heard of anyone having so many issues with their trannys. Iv towed some heavy trailers before (never used OD) without a problem.

I would Defiantly look in the re-gearing and getting some kind of trans cooler w/Efan and a trans Gauge.

I got a quote from 4wheel parts for $1450 includes Ring and Pinion and a EATON Locker Installed.

And for cooling a Troyer Performance tranny cooler $280.00
