Just to be clear, to engage 4low you must have the truck in neutral AND the brake pedal depressed, a different light will illuminate on the dashboard once it is engaged.

What you're describing sounds like something I'd take it in for. I have on 05 Fx4, and mine wont allow itself to downshift all the way to first if the speed is to high. I have a true dual exhaust setup and have no problem with it in 1st up in the mountains of North Carolina. It does just fine in 2wd, holding back going downhill. On some of the 'hills' on trails around North Central Florida I have to give it gas going downhill in 4low and 1st.

i think northeastfx4 nailed it. my standard transmission won't let me downshift into first unless im doing about 10 mph at the most.

I drove up to Pike's Peak last fall, and you better believe I had it in 1st & 2nd the whole way down. However, if you are coasting in D, it does go to a 'neutral' state after a bit. Whether or not he is in 2/4/4Lo is not the issue, as our shift on the fly transfer cases do not have a neutral position. I would take it somewhere, you are correct that it should not be coasting in 1st like that. Good luck.

Hey thanks for the replies guys, I was in 4 LO and first gear, and when I let off the gas it was like I was in neutral. I think that I will take it somewhere and have it checked out, if your guys trucks are slowing you down in 1st gear, mine is definately not.

Thanks guys.

Default take it in

My 05 5.4 1st gear holds very tight when decending steep hills. I can throw it into 1st when going as high as 25 mph, probably 39 like that other guy said, but that scares me. This is definitely something electrical. Either the PCM, shift solenoid, wiring, something is not right. The fact that you have 1st gear during acceleration tells me that the hardware may be OK, which is good. If it is something hardware related, it could be the valve body in the tranny but I'm really reaching here. I said maybe the PCM because the PCM knows when you're pressing the accelerator peddle. When it has that info it sends that to the tranny and, I'm sure, a bunch of other places that all make the truck shift and go when it's supposed to.

Range Selection from the 06 Service Manual:

Park
In the PARK position:
  • there is no power flow through the transmission.
  • the parking pawl locks the output shaft to the case.
  • the engine can be started.
  • the ignition key can be removed.
Reverse
In the REVERSE position:

  • the vehicle can be operated in a rearward direction, at a reduced gear ratio.
  • engine braking will occur.
Neutral
In the NEUTRAL position:

  • there is no power flow through the transmission.
  • the output shaft is not held and is free to turn.
  • the engine can be started.
Overdrive
Overdrive is the normal position for most forward driving.
The OVERDRIVE position provides:

  • automatic shifts.
  • apply and release of the torque converter clutch.
  • maximum fuel economy during normal operation.
Second Position
The 2nd position provides:

  • second gear start and hold.
  • torque converter clutch apply and release.
  • improved traction and engine braking on slippery roads.
  • engine braking for descending steep grades.
First Position
If this position is selected at normal road speeds, the transmission will shift into 2nd gear, then into 1st when the vehicle reaches a speed below approximately 45 km/h (28 mph) .

The 1st position provides:

  • first gear operation only.
  • engine braking for descending steep grades.
