s_vares, I have a question. My 5.4 rolled over 100k this past winter. After an oil change, or after sitting over night, I can hear the phasers/adjusters/chain rattle like hell for a split second until oil pressure is built. Then only the slightest of tick/rattle that I assumed normal with these engines. Yes it sounds like a diesel through the drive through, again from what I understand it's "normal".

It needs new plugs anyhow, so do you advise I go ahead and do all the timing set along with the plugs? To me it makes sense, but then I usually stick with don't fix what ain't broke.

A chain rattle on startup that lasts longer than 1/2 second is not normal. You may have stretched chains, bad guides, or worn tensioner seals.
Also ensure you are using a filter with a good anti drainback valve (ford, or wix)
Rattle in drive thru should only be when you first press the gas and should only last a second or so. If its doing it at idle its time for a service.

Best of luck

-Steve

I took pics with my phone before I put it together and I rechecked those last night and they are all perfect. What if my crank sensor went bad? Or I'm just spit balling here but what if I put the rely for ring on backwards. I can't imagine I did but at this point who knows. Do I have to clear the computer with a code reader or shouldn't having the battery unplugged for so long have done that? I really don't want to pull that front cover off again.
Do you remember how you put the relucter ring on??? The smooth side (the other side has the little metal pieces that stick out aroun the edge) should have been against the crank gear...

And when I was low on coolant im not it's how low I was but I had to run it and let it set three times to get all the air bubbles out and get it idling right..

I remember thinking on that ring that it was like the claymore mine "front toward enemy" but my wife called me in for breakfast right before I put it on then I put it on right after but I'm 99.7% sure I put it on right. I'm going to run it and see if I can get a CEL to come on and see if that'll help me. Also if it does lead me back to that ring I should be able to pull the left valve cover and see down to the crank shaft shouldn't I?

When you drained the coolant out of the engine, what kind of coolant did you replace it with?

From the looks of it, mine is runing the OEM Motorcraft Gold coolant that is recommended. Did you refill it with the Motorcraft or Zerex G-05 coolant?

I got my CEL to come on and I'm reading p0174 too lean bank 2. I checked all my plugs again and everything is hooked right. But when I unplug my coils one at a time it didn't change how it was running except for on the front left. So does that mean they aren't firing? I'm going to change my fuel filter to rule that out, even though I know it's not that. I'm kinda stumped. I think in going to have to pull that left valve cover and see what I can see.

Check the fuel injector wires too!!! If you don't have then clipped in all the way they won't e firing fuel which could be why pulling the cop on the other 3 did nothing for you...

K just pulled off the left hand valve cover and found the problem. My freaking timing mark is one tooth off!! How in the heck! I have a pic on my phone from right before I put the cover on and it's perfect. I was talking to an old timer mechanic and he told me after you line up the marks to rotate the engine so the chains go all the way around so you can make sure they stay. Ever heard of that? Either way it's back in I go. Thanks again for everyone's help I really do appreciate it.
