you can definitely pull the starter off and take it to an auto parts store and they will check it for you. I probably would start there before dropping the money and time on the phasers just to be sure. Doesn't take that long to take the starter off. Maybe someone that has had this symptom or knows more about it will chime in soon.

Breaking news!!!

My engine seized.

I took the starter off, bench tested it and everything was ok. Then i went back to the truck, took off the fan and serpetine belt, tried to turn the engine with a breaker bar and it doesnt turn, no matter how hard i try...

Would it still be worth it to remove the timing and valve covers to take a look? Or shall i start shopping for a replacement engine?

I would probably start shopping for a new engine. At least if you get a new or remanufactured one, you can start keeping your own maintenance log and make sure its performed right. Sorry to hear about the engine seizing though. Good luck, let us know what you decide. Maybe someone will chime in with an alternate solution.

Thanks for all the tips and info guys, finally got everything back together and fired right up. The knocking noise is gone just normal injector noise now. Sounds good and runs smooth. The only complaint I have is my mpg is staying around 9. I hope this is part of the computer relearn process since my battery was off for about 3 weeks.

Man that sucks. Feel for you. My truck now has 217,000 miles and I do a hail Mary every morning before I turn the key.

I have since replaced the Phasers, guides (R side guide broken), tensioners, crank sprocket, etc. I started it up and it ran terrible. I went back in and re-timed the engine. Put it all back together and still sounds like it is missing and no power. I have unplugged the CVT Solenoid with no change, so I'm wondering if this is it. I had great oil pressure pre and post repairs. I am getting codes P0174 and P2197 (which I assume is the O2 sensor unplugged)... I have read all 1813 posts and nothing stands out as similar. I really appreciate the posts and welcome comments.

Sorry to hear that. We we would be glad to set you up with an estimate for a set of headers with high flow catalytic converters or some replacement high flow cats if you would like.
