Chizzn, did you read the beginning of the thread?

I brought my truck to a local repair shop thinking I would have them do the work. I asked them if they had ever done cam phasers. They replied it is a pain in the *** and we don't have the special tools... WTF over?! I told them I just read 115 pages of posts on a F150 forum and no one ever mentioned special tools. I guess I'll just do it myself when I get time. The stealer wanted to sell me a new engine and the local shop doesn't know squat.

Dude!!!!
Exactly the same thing that happened to me!!!!
I took it in to them to basically do a phaser/timing chain job, theyre like we need to diagnose it ourselves. They diagnose it for 150.00, then replace the VCT solenoids..for another 650..then they say uh oh it didnt fix it you need a new engine...for 8 grand..

I spent 800 for them to look at it and do a easy 2 hour job, and an oil change. They had my truck for three days..enough time to do the job I wanted done. **** mechanic shops is what I say.

Anyway, I just hooked up a manual oil pressure gauge to my oil sending unit and it read about 60lb of pressure constant while running. This means that I don't need a new engine right? This means my cam phasers are worn out since I'm havin over retard problems right?? Any help?

Yeah. I'm talking about the guide from "no data." It claims to use a special tool to lift the valve seats on certain valves, as well as the special tool to hold the cam phaser in place. This guide doesn't say anything about special tools, but it shows one of them in the pictures.

we don't do special tools here...take the valve covers off, take the timing cover off. Lock some vice grips on the cam (not the lobes) to hold it and take the phaser bolt off, install new one and torque to spec. Install tensioners, guides and chains (on the right marks!!!) release tensioners and put all back together

I know the owner of the repair shop I brought my truck to since high school. He has a guy that sits behind the desk and answers the phone and schedules work. My friend likes to drive the wrecker so he does that part of the business. I started thinking about the counter guy and one of his mechanics comments and attitude about a profit building repair and how they basically turned it down and blew me out the door. I guess they just want to fix flat tires and put band aids on junk cars.

I'm calling my friend on Monday and telling him about the way I was treated at his shop. I am fully capable of doing this repair myself. I have a hobby resto shop and work on Porsches and Mercedes when I'm not doing my regular job. I'm a catastrophe adjuster. I work a couple months out of the year and need a truck that is ready to roll 24-7. I have never worked on my daily drivers. That is basic mechanic work and a distraction from what I enjoy. My plate is very full right now so I just want to drop the truck and have everything done at once to eliminate and issues when I get called to my real job.

I would never bring my truck to my friends shop now. Specially after I have a conversation with him about what goes on when he is out on wrecker duty but he needs to know that his counter man is turning down good profitable work for what seems to be lack of interest.

Rant off. Anywho I have one more place to try then I will just set my stuff aside and do the job myself.

most can tackle this job but it is very time consuming. I did mine myself only because one shop couldn't guarantee that they would resolve issue and the other's solution was engine replacement.
