I agree with the others: Coil spring, they have a tendency to break down near the lower seat, takes a minute to find the break, but it's a known issue.

The discovery process sounds like one of my Dad's stories from his mechanic days. Chrysler had recently gone to torsion bar front suspensions in their cars, and at the time the tech wasn't quite ready for prime time.

One of the owners had a new Chrysler with the torsion bars, and one broke. He dropped the car off with the garage to have Dad work on it. The owner is at the parts store talking with the counter person, the counter guy calls Dad to double check what they guy needs.

As they're on the phone talking about the car, dad hears a loud "Clang" from the garage, and looks out to see the other side of the Chrysler has settled about an inch. He picks up the phone and tells the counter guy "Tell him to get 2."

Whoa. That's crazy. Can you salvage the spring or just going to "spring" for some coil overs?

Well the spring was sheared pretty bad. I just dropped $175 on a gabriel ready-mount coilover. It was kind of a pain in the to remove because of the level spacer the previous owner installed. Had to disconnect the upper control arm, tie rod end, and sway bar linkage. But all in all it went smoothly. Here are some pics of the broken one and the new...

You only replaced one side? I guess if funds are tight thats fine. I never just replace one shock/strut at a time, always in pairs for me. Glad you got it fixed.
