Not saying your problem is the stepper motor, but mine did the same thing.

I think I paid $95 to replace the two steppers, and he re-soldered some other joint in the cluster somewhere.

Nice. And normal shops can do it? Or it has to be a speedo shop?

Bucko, you think the cluster wire would be found in the plastic box in the frame?

If anyone can send me to some pictures which show where the wires come out of the fuel sending unit and where they go to that would be helpful. I am not having any luck with Google and I don't have a service manual.

Thanks.

I've read in other posts that the fuel sending wire runs in a harness that can be found (connector) under the drivers door, along the frame rail. I've located this plastic cover, and indeed, there is a connector there. My truck is a Florida truck (always has been), and is not a 4x4, so this cover does not see any mud or snow buildup. There has not been a need for me to check this connector for any failure of an electrical circuit that is bound to this connector.

Ironically, after reading this thread awhile back, my gas gauge did have a funky reading. After a fill up, it stayed on 1/4, but after 20 minutes, it came back to full, and has been reading correct since. I found that this issue can happen, if you disconnect the battery for a period of time, or fill the tank with the key in the "on" position.

In the case of the OP though, my gauge needle never dropped off its scale.
