Okay, I'm actually asking for my wife's 2005 Expedition. But I'm assuming that it's the same 5.4 engine. I need to replace the fan clutch assembly. First time so don't mock my ignorance!

There are 8 plastic screws holding the fan shroud in place that I have to take out first and they don't come out like a regular screw. Are they the kind that I can simply just pop out with a flat head screwdriver? If so why do they have a philips head top?

Yes and yes. They are plastic and thread down to expand out the back side of the clip. You may need to pry up to keep pressure on the clip so the Philips threads bite and unscrew
