After just removing mine I can tell you they are conventional. Very easy to do with the rental kit but I think with a hammer and regular wrench I could have jarred it enough to remove the nut just fine. Just takes a couple good quick whacks.

On my 2007 4.6 V8, the fan clutch bolt is loosened by turning it counter clockwise.

The fan itself is basically on a giant spindle that screws over the end of the water pump. The water pump has like a bell on it that's held on by four bolts. Both those bolts AND the fan shaft are conventionally-threaded.
