Default F150 trade for a powerstroke

So I've been thinking of selling my 04 lariat and getting a 7.3l powerstroke in the 2000 range. I'm looking for something with a bit better mileage and more rear end as i like to mud and got stuck as hell the other day trying to pull a buddy out. Also the cam phasers are killing me and i just dont see the reason to get worse mileage in a half ton when i could have a 3/4 ton with a hell of a lot more power, torque, sound, size, etc etc. What do yall think of this plan? I've found a couple lariat Screws 4x4 with under 90k miles for around 17 or 18 grand which i could easily get for my truck with only 63,500 miles. opinions are definitely wanted!!!

Get an 01. Just remember to factor in maintenance. The stroke holds 15 quarts of oil. Filter is like $10 as opposed to $4. Fuel filter is around $25 instead of $6.

But,you get a kick ***** truck. I wish I still had a diesel. I got 20-21 avg mpg with my cummins.

I would love to have a powerstroke.. my buddy has had everything... owned a 01 f250 7.3L, 02 f150 5.4L. Now he has a 08 6.4 and a 02 7.3.

He swears by the 7.3 as the best engine. he keeps the 08 as a show truck though. the 7.3 is a solid engine but definatly keep maintenence in mind when buying one. Diesel Injectors cost a lot of money but I think its an awesome looking/driving truck. Cummings is the best but Ford has the best looking truck IMO.

You couldn't pay me to drive a Dodge. I'm going to start researching the hell out of 7.3's and talk to my dad since he always helps me make the right choices, well most the time . I'm just tired of stupid little things breaking on this damn truck and sick of the phasers and what not, plus you gotta love a tunder straight pipe turbo diesel!

my old show truck was a retired horse trailer hauler from texas it was mint and had 256k miles i lifted it and ran 38s with a cai exhuast programer and gears it was getting 18-20 mpg about what i get from my 4.6 f150 and it was way more badass i drove it in the summer only and it had 280k when i made the mistake of selling it never had an issue just changed the oil every 3000 and clean the air filter and changed fule filter every 6000

This. I really don't think that is going to give you the results you want.

IMHO you'd be better off just getting your phasers fixed. You mentioned stupid things going wrong but only named the phasers. Is there REALLY stuff wrong with your truck or are you just tired/bored/just want to justify the PSD?

my input is unless you will be towing trailers all day everyday, there really is no need for a diesel. yes, their awesome and sound badass but is it really worth it just for mudding? my f150 pulls through mud better than my buddies 03 duramax.. thats just my thought.

They are BAMFs but is it practical for what you really need? If you can afford it and you want to then why not. As others have pointed out I wouldn't want to get it stuck

Which is why in a few years I plan to buy an F-250 and keep the F-150 for a more dedicated off-roader.
