There is a chance you may just be low on refrigerant.

Running with no stat (in addition to all the above) will also send your fuel economy in the toilet. The computer dumps more fuel to get the motor up to operating temp. It will continue to dump fuel because it won't get up to 195 degrees

wow i get the picture. do not run without thermo. here's another thing that i think could be the problem.

my coolant has a LARGE amount of sludge in the coolant. i temporarily installed an engine that had been sitting up for several years and ran it for a week or so. as a result i got alot of brown rust in the cooling system.

Could this be my problem?

i'm thinking of a good rad flush with water on radiator and then engine, then replacing with new coolant. i'm sure it won't hurt, but what is best way to accomplish the flush?

If you have sludge in the coolant, you should definitely flush it. I would drain it all, then stick a garden hose in the res and flush with the bottom and top hose off. May even want to do the same with your heater hoses to flush that out as well. Then top it off with some water and coolant added and run the engine to operating temps and then drain it again. You want to make sure all the crap or as much as possible is flushed. There is also radiator flush kits but I have never tried those. Good luck. By the way, I responded to a PM that I think you sent me, I have just been so tied up and haven't had a chance to call to catch up.
Good luck
Tom

I like using the NAPA 1500 Flush. Just follow the directions and you'll be fine.

I really think your original problem is that you're low on refridgerant in your AC system. Have somebody with a set of gauges check it out. That little single line you get from the chain stores is crap.

You can technically run without a coolant system entirely.

O.K.

You try it, and let us know how long your engine ran; idle is fine for your test.
