Default exhaust leak/tick

Lately Ive noticed when starting my truck that theres a tick like its got an exhaust leak. Its an '06 with a 5.4 and 127k.

I notice it more when its parked next to other cars and it echoes off them. I really don't notice it when driving. The exhaust isn't loud at all (and all original stock).

It doesn't seem like a manifold gasket- I had one go back on a car and it sounded horrible while driving it.

Since my truck is an '06 I don't think the cam phasers are the issue but maybe they are?

I'd like to get this minor annoyance fixed.

So I rode in my cousin's '04 F150 over the weekend and his sounds like a diesel due to the cam phasers.

Mine sounds nothing like his does at all.

Bump. I'm interested too about when the cam phasers were refined. I have a 2005 but recently found out that it has an October 2006 engine in it. hoping the phasers were fixed by then and all I need are new manifolds.

If you have a manifold leak it should quiet after a minute or 2 of running. My 05 was kind of noise, and I switched from Mobil 1 5W20 to 5W30, and the overall noise of the engine has drop conciderably.

I don't notice it while driving and I think it does go away quick.

Does it just need a gasket or a whole new manifold?

I noticed youre a local.

Manifolds are known to crack...got to inspect it once you get it off. gotta take it off either way...

Buy an automotive stethoscope it's under $10 on ebay. Hold it to your valve cover see what you hear. Lash adjusters tend to go out on these engines after 100k and f left unattended will take out your followers and cams.

I don't have the time, place or patience to do that unfortunately. Seems like a job best left to a professional.

Ive got one and will have to check it out. I think its just an exhaust leak at this point though.

these engines are also prone to broken exhaust studs so do a visual on those. Mine has the same noise ( 08 xlt screw 4x4 ) and the driver's rear manifold stud is broken off. a $600.00 repair if you take it to a shop to remove the manifold and then the studs.
