Exhaust with Cold Air and DiabloSport
I've got an 06 5.4L XLT 4×4. I tow rarely but do go play in the mud and hills off and on. I have a K&N 57 FIPK, E3 plugs, Accel coils, and DiabloSport inTune currently set on 87 K&N Performance (but next gas tank I'm gonna try 93 tune!). My exhaust is factory but stops right after the muffler. Everywhere I read says to upgrade exhaust to balance the breathing with the intake. Is my lack of pipes enough or do I need to upgrade headers, cats, muffler, etc. too? I want performance but to also balance mpg too. I plan on this being my lifetime truck so any advice is appreciated.

For starters, you need to open it up after the CAT, Magnaflow makes a good system. You could also swap out the cats with freeflow ones from Magnaflow as well. Air in exhaust out, the more the better.

How u like the accel coils? I have them and notice sum extra power . A lot of guys on here shy awAy from them but I've had good luck with them . And as far as exhaust goes set ur self up with a nice catback system magma flow makes a good set up. Try to stay away from removing cats and stuff I got mine kicked out Infront of the back tire . U can have a short exhaust just make sure u keep cats and muffler .

I did that once on an old 67 Chevy C30, put the pipe in front of the tire, and the hot exhaust turned the tire to mush. LOL

I dumped the cats and installed spacers on the rear o2 sensors to keep the check engine light out. Then I got a Turbo big block muffler I can stick my arm through and ran it out in front of the right rear tire. Sounds sick. Im getting almost 14 mpg at 60mph on 38s. And I have the same tunner as you.

Im on 33x12.5/17s with Rancho RS9000XLs so about 2inches of lift up front. Big cattle guard and whole truck's Rhino lined so a lotta weight to deal with too. I was 11.5mpg before any changes. Now Im around 14.
I like the Accels pretty well. They may not have given more power, but they certainly let me use more that I had. I could feel a difference too.
Another question - when I upgrade my muffler, how and why would having pipes come from it help as opposed to no pipes after the muffler? I obviously dont know much about exhaust flow... just dont understand how could breath better through 4-8 feet of pipes vs wide open
