Will phasers or bad timing components cause a rough idle and no low end power? Also how long can I go before something goes completely bad? The knocking sounds louder than it has been previously

Default Yes it will

If you don't shut it down and do timing job things can go really bad . Mine got so bad it threw the no 8 intake cam roller to the side . I immediately shut it down .
I'm sorry to tell you its about $1400 in parts if you do it right . Rebuilt jasper engine $7500.
Its very do-able if you have the will .At the costs of new trucks 40 to 60k its not bad . The loan interest alone is way more than 1400 in one year.
Just don't cut corners, make sure you get new oil pump, melling 340 or 360. Drop oil pan and clean out oil pump screen it may be full of plastic guard pieces .
I used oem select for most of my parts . I had 150k mi so I put new lash adjusters and rollers in her . Clean vct housings and put new vcts in . I regret not putting old style metal ratcheting tensioners in my 05 5.4 3v .
She's running good but I know that could prevent some future problems .
You need to do plugs and boots in addition to timing job , the timing job needs plugs out anyway .
There lots of help on here read svares final fix sticky .

I ordered a Mellings m360 oil pump. Power balance showed all the cylinders not in a line. They where all over the place. It shakes real bad when not in gear. When In gear the shaking gets better.

Finally got to tearing it down and what I found was a collapsed timing chain tensionor on the pass side bank. Chain was really loose and that was the cause of the noise. When you put pressure on the tensionor, it moves the cam phasers which is why the timing was off. Hopefully I'll get it put back tommorrow. I pulled the valve covers and front cover off and then called it day.

Default I made the mistake of using new plastic tensioners

I would put the old type metal ratchet tensioners in it instead . They are not cheap either . Plus I'm glad I changed all rollers and lash adjusters . Its too hard to get in there . Da** power steering pump mounts .

I finally put it back together and it still has a rough idle except it doesn't have chain or phaser noise anymore. I didn't change the vct solenoids just yet so maybe that's the cause? Also put a Mellings M360 oil pump in.

Did you do the relearn? I'm guessing you disconnected the battery? If so the relearn may fix the idle.

I did leave the battery disconnected over night. How do you do the relearn as I have not done it. Didn't know you had to.

Search battery relearn process on the forum to very all the details. Basically you just have to let it idle a couple ways and drive it. It will eventually relearn on its own over time with enough driving.

I also noticed that my throttle response isn't as responsive as it was before. Could that be part of the relearn as well?
