The fuel injectors in these motors are quite loud as well, it really may just be "normal" sounds your hearing. There are several issues common to the 3v 5.4L that cause abnormal ticking sounds so you may have an actual problem, but you may end up doing a lot of repairs for something that can't be fixed. Just thought I would throw that out there.

Will unplugging the VCT Solenoids for a few minutes turn the check engine light? I have an Edge Evo so I think even if it does I can simply clear the code using that?

On the front of each valve cover. If you have a 2006 or newer its easy, 2007 require a lot more work.

Lots of posts on here showing you how to do it... YouTube also has some videos on replacement. The solenoids are about $65 each and $15 for each seal. I have seen two new ones with seals on eBay for around $110.

If yours is on 06 or older:

07 and newer you have more work and unless you really have the skill and time I would have a shop do those.
