If you bought it from a dealership and it started ticking soon after, they probably put honey or something in the oil to quiet it down. If the ticking is louder from the wheel well, it's more likely a loose plug / lash adjuster / manifold gasket than your timing components.

You'll hear a quick "tickatickaticka" as they wind back down, then the truck will sort of sound like a diesel as it idles (after it's hot and the VCT solenoids are active). If it's just a rhythmic tick, once per revolution, it's probably a failing lash adjuster.

The shaking: If the U joint doesn't do anything, I have a few recommendations.
1. Take off your parking brake and go for a drive. If the shaking is gone, there's your problem. Replace the shoes (very cheap), remove the scissor actuator lever and break it apart (they frequently rust into one solid piece) and wire brush / sand / grease the hell out of it, then reinstall.
2. Have your drive shaft balanced. These things seem to fail for no reason. Mine worked fine until one day... for whatever reason... So I took it to a driveline shop. They ground off one of the factory weights and that put it back in balance.
- Added knowledge: the drive shafts in these trucks are junk out of the factory. They have stickers on them that say "SCRAP IF DROPPED." That should tell you a lot.
3. Rotate your tires. If the vibration moves or "feels different", you need your tires balanced.
Thank you for the information. The more and more I read the more I'm positive it's not the cam phasers. The ticking is always there and only changes with engine speed (higher rpms faster ticking, lower rpms slower ticking). We're pretty sure it's coming from the top end of the motor so we're thinking maybe a sticky head/follower is the culprit. I'm taking the truck back next Thursday and he's going to dig into it.

As for the shaking, the u-joint was the problem. I've had them go bad in the past but never had shaking at just a specific speed.

Bought from an individual but the local dealer did the plug change. The invoice was in the truck (3 of the 8 broke). Surprisingly, the tick was louder in the wheel wells and underneath the truck than it was topside. I did some reading and found out about torquing the plugs. My first mechanic thought I was nuts, the second one tightened them after I told him to just humor me and I had no problem paying the labor. #8 was loose, there were a few other that were snug, but still moved before popping the wrench.

I feel I may have been a bit misleading in my earlier post... I say "it never went away" as at the time, nothing I did changed the noise. Once my mech tightened the loose plug, it ran quiet as can be.

Thank you also to the 170+ others that viewed the thread and had no input. It's hard to believe nobody had a suggestion or any idea. This seems like a real helpful community (yes, that's sarcasm).
Might have something to do with the fact that this is the most well-documented issue on this forum. Use the search function, don't be an Ahole.

Thanks d-bag. Like I said, I used the search and didn't find much stating my exact problem. I believe the well documented issue is with the cam phasers, which is not my problem. So thank you, but no thank you.
