Engine knock
My truck has the same noise. Finally at the third dealership I got an answer. Camshaft syncronizers. I would try to go into more detail but I won't try and expalin. Call Burt Ford in Centennial,CO and ask for Lonnie and he will explain it. This is not a cheap job either. it is costing me a cool $1600. Add in the faulty window regulators, rear end issues whistling at highway speeds, and a/c problems an it all equals the last Ford I will ever own.
I hope this helps and good luck

i have the same noise. i just picked my truck up today from the dealer after they inspected it. despite my g/f, my buddies and myself all hearing the ticking loud and clear, the dealer says they dont hear anything. ill guess ill wait till the motor falls apart completely then take it back and say "i told you so"

I have that noise on my truck to whenever i'm next to a wall or house etc. Kind of like a constant tick..tick..tick..tick..tick, and when i'm driving slowly right next to something it's almost a rattle sound.

The noise you are hering coming from back side on driver side? never gets louder and stays the same . Get the extented warrenty if possible !!! I had the same problem bought truck with 24k it just turned 80k and this past Friday at lunch time started truck and sound like the bottom end was going to come thru oil pan. I got lucky and found a engine with 5k on it that was a (Ford) take out long block $1600.00 but when it is all done and said i will have well over $2000.00 in it and that is no labor cost , I lucky to have a friend who has the shop and exp . Do not yet know what happen but will update in a couble of weeks when i pull out.

I have the same problem and i just have been driving it b/c i bought the truck it did not have a warranty on it. The only thing is the truck only has 47k miles on it which would be great if it was still under warranty and i could get it fixed. But i listen to alot of other fords with the 5.4 and they make the same noise but then some dont make no noise. So i dont know if i would fix it or just drive it until it blows up if it evers does blow up

There was a problem with 04 and some 05 5.4L lifters. I had to have all of my lifters replaced in my truck because it sounded like a diesel with about 30,000 miles on it. There was a service bulliten on the problem at the time. The lifters were replace and the noise was gone.

I took my truck to the dealer yesterday about this issue and was told it is probably the cam phasers. I have to drop off my truck sometime this week when i get the chance.
