I posted this on the F-250 page but there seems to not be a lot of traffic over there. I thought I would post here since I spend more time on this forum and my F-150. Figured they are similar enough to get some input:

"I have an F-250 XLT 460 that I drive occasionally, about 1000 miles per year. This weekend I drove it over 500 miles and near the end of the trip the "Check Engine" light came on. Then it went off after a few miles, then came back on. The gages were all normal and the truck ran good. What could this have been? When I got home I turned the truck off and about 30 minutes later I went out and started it again and the light did not come on. Would a fault register if I get it checked out or was this a temporary situation??"

What year is your truck? If it is a 1996 or newer (OBD II), you can retrieve the trouble codes with a handheld scanner. If you don't have one, most auto parts stores loan them for free.

Best place to start. would be with the OBD2 if you can. Otherwise, its probably just due for some mantenance. Clean the TB and MAF, Run some injector cleaner, change the plugs and update the ignition system. Change oil and fliter obviously. Probably

Forgot to put the year, it is a 1996, I did have the oil changed before the trip. I thought it may be an O2 sensor or PCV valve issue, just did not know if it would show up on a scan if it had cleared. It seemed to run okay and I got a whopping 9 MPG pulling a trailer!!! Makes my F-150 seem economical in comparison, lol. Another maintenance project to add to the spring list, been a long winter!!!
