It is definitely the alternator, I have this problem and I am headed in to get a new alternator next week. What causes it is the shrinking of bearings in the alternator, which makes you love the guy whose choose them for ford. I have had a few friends who have changed their alternators because of the sound, just to let everyone know it may come back if you go back with another one from ford because they use the same bearings.

just had mine in the shop today for the same noise. As stated before, loudest at 1800.I figured the techs couldnt get it to do it, so I had one of them come with me, and before we even left the lot, and hearing it, just by me explaining it to him, he narrowed it down to alternator. So when i was finally able to get it to do it, he confirmed it. Said to either deal with it, as it doesnt cause any harm, or buy a new alt. But he did say that it will probably come back on the new one too. Im going to deal with it until it warms up outside. Or buy aftermarket alt. eventually.

Does no harm to engine at all.Alternator is right. My budy just replaced his stock alternator with a aftermarket one,and sound went away. Now if a person has dual exhaust, more than likely your not gonna hear it anyways.

Now what i did actually with my older F-150,and hey it was cheap,i put that silver lining sheeting that allot of ppl use for their stereo's to to help minimize the the vibration,or whatever else they use it for.Took my whole dash off, lined it with that, took the inside of the doors off and lined it with it also. For me that worked and hey i was bored that day and i haven't heard it since i did that, lol. Was a bitch for all these little nuts and bolts to put back in,but hey it was a learning experience.
