Default Emergency Brake

I have a 2004 f150 xlt 5.4. It has about 65000 on it. I had trouble the other day with power. It felt like I was towing a 50,000 lb trailer. Took to the dealer and today they called. The emergency brake system malfunctioned. The emergency brake was rubbing on the rotor for a long time and finally dug itself into the rotor. So it slowed me down. I never use the emergency brake. Not sure how this happend. So now I get to dish out 1100 to fix it. They need to replace the rotors, pads, flush and replace the fluid for the emergency brake, and fix the adjusters. Want to know if anyone else has had this problem???

There have been a lot of issues with the emergency brake set-up on these early models. Enough so, there is a technical service bulletin published about it. The actuating lever/cam is two pieces and typically seizes up because of rust. The fix involves removing rear brakes, rotor, e-brake shoes, and this lever. Clean off the rust and use high-temp brake grease on the cam. If this lever is beyond cleaning up or repair, they run about $25.00 a piece from Ford.

Replace the fluid for the emergency brake? I could have sworn that the parking/emergency brake was cable driven, not hydraulic.

They told menthe fluid for the emergency brake. Then he told me the cables were fine as well. I'm not sure if he even knows what he is talking about.

And I had all fluids replaced about a year and a half ago.

The cables grab lever attached to a screw that moves the piston in and out of the caliper, the piston is submerged in brake fluid, but the only reason I would see to replace the fluid would be because it was contaminated and making the piston stick. If it was my truck and the piston was sticking I would just put on a new caliper, but its never a bad idea to change out your brake fluid.

I know!!! Last time going to the dealer. I'm going to try to find a mechanic with some decent rates. Wish I knew how to fix the stuff myself.

I had no E brake pedal at all, It went to the floor. Took my 2004 screw to my repair shop. They said it had major problems and would cost few hundred bucks to repair. Told them never mind. Watched this You Tube video and did the entire job myself. Replaced all e brake hardware including springs, pads etc. for a total of $50. Also wire brushed the steel "butterfly" parts and used never seize on them so they won't freeze up in the future. It now works perfect in every way. Watch the video. It is thorough.
