odometer numbers went away shortly after the battery was replaced. then the doors would relock when pulling away from a stop.
i pulled the cluster, all solder looked good. reinstalled & it all worked.
then after truck sat for a couple weeks, the battery was too low to start. after charging the battery, the odometer backlight was gone but numbers still intact.
just this morning while driving the needles were dropping to zero & warning lights came on & heard a chime. it corrected itself but odometer is now dark with no numbers.
My symptoms are exactly the same. I have not done any troubleshooting other than having the battery/alt tested, which came back fine. Pulling the instrument cluster seems to be pretty quick/simple process, so I'm going to attempt that tomorrow and check/re-solder and cold joints to see what happens. It's been years with the odo backlight off, but with the odo completely gone and the random beeps, warning lights coming on, it's driving me nuts!

pulled the cluster yesterday & replaced the burned out bulb i believed to be for the odometer with the one from the cruise control. reconnected the cluster connectors & looks like it all works normal. wont be driving it until friday so not sure if all is well yet.

I pulled mine yesterday as well, The contacts on the twist-lock for the bulb behind the odometer seemed flattened out, so I adjusted those and that fixed the backlight problem.

As for the odometer being off - the odometer seemed to have become unseated from the board. I reseated it, checked solder joints - all looked good. Put it all back together and all was good!

20 minutes later while driving, I got that dreaded beep from the dash, all warning lights on, 4x4 light flashing, tach, speedometer, and voltage gauges were all dead, about 30 seconds later, everything went back to normal, except the odometer is off again. The backlight is still lit, but no display

I'm now at a loss.

All my solder joints looked good, but I touched all mine up anyways. It fixed my brake light, and interior lights randomly coming on.

I would actually solder the joints. Its very difficult to see if there is a problem.

it still failed. i pulled out the cluster yesterday & found the odometer not fully plugged into the connector. reseated it & appears to be good now.
i cannot see well enough even with magnified light to re-solder any joints so i didnt. now time will tell

Unfortunately I'm still chasing this. In addition to the things listed above, I've also swapped battery, reseated display again, and resoldered the joints behind the display and the joints where the wire harness plugs in and still have the problem. I think i've traced it down to the left wire harness, as I can move the wires in the harness and cause/stop the problem. I added some zip ties to the harness to keep the wires from moving as much and the problem is less often now. Next step is going to be me going down to a junk yard and cutting out a harness off a wrecked truck. Hopefully that will be the end of my woes

Has anyone figured out exactly what it is that is causing the problem, Let me know if anyone has before I start tearing my dash apart, please.

As there seems to be a lot of people with the same issues, has Ford ever done a recall
Two years now and still the same. It isn't happening as much and when does, I whack the dash and it goes away. I know this isn't a solution but helps with the frustration. I am told it is the clusters behind the dash. I will work on it in the summer with a friend to see if a fix is doable or if a replacement is necessary.
