Has anyone running custom settings advanced their timimg according to the Octane they are running? I read in the Evo manual that you can bump it up .5 for each octane point higher than 91. So if you run 93 then you should be able to bump it up 1 degree of timing correct?

Yes, you can bump the timing .5degrees for every 1 octane above 91. Unless you are at higher altitudes. and another thing, running each level for 20 minutes will not give you a true feeling for the tune. These trucks have an adaptive strategy so to speak, once you tune the "memory" is reset and it will take it awhile to relearn your habits.

thanks to all that have posted...1 more question though....who's got a cai and exhaust with their evo? I have an AFE stage II and flowmaster super 40
My shifts seem pretty rough on lvl 3 under wot....normal driving though it is o.k. I use 92 always even on lvl 2 so I will try lvl 3 again.
If anyone changes the timing let us know if you feel any change.

just curious on how much it would hurt or make a difference if I ran like 89 octane on lvl 3? I just got the evo the other day and trying to get a little more info on it. Im not towing with it on that lvl nor driving it like i stole it. was just curious if I still should run 92 in it or if it would be okay. I dont have any other mods on it other than cutting the muffler off.

I believe lvl 3 requires a min 91 octane or you'll get some pinging, at least I did with my 05 FX4.
I have a True Flow CAI and flowmaster cat back with my Evo, never had a problem at all, most say it will run lean but if you read up on adaptive strategy used in these trucks PCM's you'll see that it will correct itself with time.

I've tried bumping up the timing. I used 89 octane in the level 2 mode with timing up +1.0 for about 3/4 tank. Truck ran sweet but the mpg's went down. Put it back to just +0.5, still feel a little more power, and the mpg's came back. I have also heard these trucks are just about running lean out of the factory so with a CAI we would be adding to that condition. The DWV or Gotts mod is before the flow sensor so the truck can readjust to this condition. With exhaust mods and CAI many people say the Gryphon from PHP will be programmed to optimize everything. Thinking about sending mine out. If you Google it there is plenty to read up on.

I personally can't teel the differance between the two. Mine stays on level 2. Also does anybody ever get codes and engine light when running the programer? Can't remember the code but it does it about twice a week usualy in the morning when I first start out and in the same place. Go figure.
