Dumb question, aftermarket muffler vs straight pipe
I've been reading pages of posts about improving sound -
some people just replace the muffle with a piece of straight pipe, others spend $ (sometimes big $) on aftermarket muffler or even full system.
What's the difference in sound & performance between straight pipe and aftermarket muffler?
I know that sounds really simple but I'm just trying to figure out if there's a real benefit in spending extra dollars on aftermarket muffler to stop my truck sounding like a 1.3 Hyundai.

An after market muffler will increase horsepower, torque and your Mpg's. If you straight pipe it, you will loose all of these. However the straight pipe will be nice and loud and have a solid tone to it. Flowmaster mufflers have great sound ( I have a 40 series on mine) and I recommend them to everybody. If you want it really loud-super 10, decently loud-super 44,super 40, mild/intermediate sound- super 50.

Nothing rattle canned
I've had a straight pipe for a couple years now and have lost zero HP , TQ or MPG. And love the sound and performance!
Only difference with aftermarket exhausts is what they'll cost you to buy...$$$

I agree, I have true dual straight pipes on my truck. No performance loss or MPG loss. My brother has been running them on his 2000 F150 for 4 years without any problems. They are loud, but that's what i like. If you want it to be quieter, get a muffler

Straight pipes here, and im pretty sure they helped performance. I recomend them, but they arent loud enough for me, so im hoping to redo my exhaust with glasspacks or a super 10 series.

Mine isn't loud at all, most people ask me what cat back system I have bc it sounds clean and crisp...I love it. Only thing I want to do is put a chrome tip on it.

Yea same here. It sounds like a racecar above 3000 rpm's and then it just rumbles below that. I blow peoples doors off. I was sitting in my truck on break at work and three people got into a revving competition in the drivethru, and i started my truck, gave it a few good revs and they all stopped.
